Fuerteventura is the second biggest island of the Canaries and the nearest to Africa, with the western shore of Morocco only away by 100 kilometres. Geologically the oldest island of the archipelago, it has an incredible landscape of dry steppe, hill, and sand dunes with a coastline that exceeds 320 kilometres. Fuerteventura gets flocked by numerous sun-worshippers and water sports lovers in look of a single thing: the most perfect beaches in the archipelago. You can’t blame them as the beaches are perfect for not only the lazy holidays but also a lot of water sports activities such as windsurfing, snorkelling, yachting, kite surfing and water skiing. But the island has a lot more to offer, from dessert vistas and awe-inspiring volcanoes to pleasant harbour promenades and colourful towns, all of which visitors would be foolish to skip. Away from the shoreline, desolate roads lined with squat, round windmills link small villages of sugar cube cottages. Here, the population lives out an existence producing world-famous cheese and crimson red tomatoes.
The two most popular tourist resorts on Fuerteventura are located at different ends of the Island. Down on the southern tip lies the stylish resort of Morro Jable, known for its vast beaches, picturesque resorts and a loggerhead Turtle nursery plus the area offers some of the best surfing conditions on the island. The Northern coast is home to Corralejo, a popular resort with dune-backed white sandy beaches such as Playa del Moro. Also, Betancuria, the first capital, is an isolated inland oasis, and its exquisite 17th-century church of Santa María is most definitely worth a visit.
