Located on the Caribbean coast of southeastern Mexico, along the Great Mesoamerican Reef, Cancun is one of the world’s most beautiful beach destinations. Surrounded by the breathtaking Caribbean Sea, soft coral sands, and the striking shade of blue that emerges from its crystal-clear waters, a visit to Cancun will make you wonder whether you are in a dream or else.
Cancun’s white sandy beaches and warm, crystal waters makes it a paradise for all beach and water sports enthusiasts. Add vibrant nightlife and the closeness to the breathtaking Mayan ruins and you have Mexico´s most popular tourist hot spot. Caring for four million tourists yearly, it’s hard to believe that this beautiful resort was a calm fishing village just a few decades ago. Cancun is best known as a sporting and wedding resort where you can choose your own pace and lifestyle to suit your frame of mind. Its colourful buzz and ancient Mayan traditions co-existing with ultra-modern developments enchant everyone, from backpackers to luxury travellers.
The most iconic area of Cancun, known to the world as the “Hotel Zone,” is a 13-mile-long island sandbar that is attached to the mainland by its northern and southern tips. The strip of land is home to over a hundred hotels and luxury resorts – all within walking distance of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The range of options for tourists of all ages that Cancun offers, go beyond your imagination – scuba dive or enjoy a relaxing afternoon squishing soft sand between your toes, then head to one of the many restaurants in the Hotel Zone. After dinner, sip on a margarita at a local bar and dance to the world’s best DJs at one of the Zone’s vibrant nightclubs. Explore the Hotel Zone by shopping at the La Isla outdoor mall or leave the main resort area of Cancun and tour El Rey, a Mayan archaeological site with dozens of stone structures – including a Mayan temple and burial site. Don’t let the party reputation fool you – Cancun has much, much more than that, but you do have to go looking for it. Cancun definitely has it all for travelers looking to have the vacation of their life.
When To Go
Cancun weather is tropical and it’s fantastic almost all year round, though it is particularly excellent from the end of December through April, with January through March being the absolute peak time for spotless weather. These months have the least amount of rain and humidity, the balmiest temperatures, and the sunniest skies. Even though the crowds are heavier, you’ll experience near-perfect weather and find some of the cheapest flight and room rates for a winter getaway at the beach. Just try to avoid travelling from mid-March to early April – that’s when spring breakers descend on the Yucatán’s shores. Late June is especially hot, so come prepared or try the offseason. It should also be mentioned that hurricanes can be a major threat in late summer and autumn.
